In 2021 the Tamarack Fire burned 68,000 acres around the Sierra Nevada town of Markleeville, CA. In the fire's path was Turtle Point State Park, a campground and nature preserve. The fire moved quickly through here, leaving only charred trees and the metal grilling posts that stood at each campsite. The park remains closed, with evidence of a slow restoration dotted around the now vast open space. But beneath it all, plants and small animals are making a comeback. Despite the desolation, if you look down you'll see a whole wonderful world of life. An ecosystem readying the land for regeneration.
